RENECO International Wildlife Consultants, LLC., is recruiting a research assistant for a 12-month contract started beginning of January 2023, to assist researchers, PhD candidate and a master student in the completion of experiments, as part of a research programme on reproductive physiology of bustards (North African, Asian houbara and Arabian bustards) and falcons (Gyrfalcon).
Captive houbara are artificial bred, following a strict genetic management. This conservation breeding programme aims at reinforcing natural populations while preserving founder representation and the genetic diversity within the captive flock.
The houbara captive population represents an ideal system to explore experimentally the underlying mechanisms of male reproductive success and the evolutionary consequences sexual selection in interaction with aging.
RENECO is responsible for managing the conservation breeding centres in Morocco, United Arab Emirates, and central Asia for houbara and falcon reproduction.
The assistant will be involved in different projects related to the effect of male age on sperm competition and male reproductive success in bustards, that combines a detailed description of the mechanisms underlying spermatogenesis, sperm and ejaculate attributes, female sperm storage and endocrinology with an experimental approach aiming at assessing the effect of male age on fertilization success. Also, projects related to bustard semen cryopreservation and its use consequences for fertility and offspring quality. On relation to falcons, the projects are related to description of falcon reproductive features, endocrinology, and semen characteristics. For last the assistant might participate on telomere size comparison studies within the genetic laboratory.
The assistant will be requested to follow up consumables and equipment orders with suppliers and the laboratory inventory and organization with the help of the students.
The candidate must hold minimum a bachelor’s degree in related areas (biology, biomedicine, biotechnology, or veterinary medicine). The candidate must be familiar with reproductive biology associated laboratory technics, such as ELISA protocols and readings (hormonal dosage), molecular biology protocols (DNA extraction, PCR). Knowledge on assisted technologies in sperm analysis such as CASA system use (SCA), or flow cytometric analysis of sperm samples and fluorescent, phase contrast and light microscopy, would be an asset.
Work will be conducted partially in Morocco at the physiology laboratory of the Emirates Centre for Wildlife Propagation (ECWP- Missour and Enjil) and partially in the United Arab Emirates in the artificial insemination and at the Genetic laboratory of national Avian Research centre in Sweihan- Abu Dhabi.
Transportation, accommodation, insurance, and meals will be provided, salary will be based according to the candidate background level.
She/he must have a good level of writing and oral English be able to handle excel and access database, good level of written and oral French is desirable. She/he must have good teamwork skills and show a strong working ethic.
