Pediatric unit Charge Nurse (CN) is responsible to supervise and manage nursing services and personnel who’s assigned to work in Pediatric unit to ensure quality client care. Promotes and facilitates children’s health by establishing a plan of care and educating both patients and their families about their conditions. Collaborates with physicians and multidisciplinary team members in providing physical and psychological support to patients and families.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides direct patient care as an effective team member and promotes the highest standards of clinical nursing care established on evidence based practice.
  • Ensures that physician’s orders are carried out and clarify any areas of uncertainty as needed with primary treating team.
  • Ensures an accurate, updated and effective hand-over of patient care provision, assignments and other required information at shift change.
  • Monitors and guides staff as appropriate in the provision of care and providing support or supervision as required.
  • Collaborates with the SCN, assigns and coordinates patient care for safe staffing, material resources and related duties.
  • Effective patient care provision safeguarding the health and safety of co-workers, fire prevention management and infection control procedures
  • Awareness of quality initiatives and support in collection of data and care improvement for positive accreditation standards and outcomes
  • Participate in rostering of monthly unit rota, ensure staffing skills-mix and level appropriately considering proper staff vacation plan.
  • Support SCN in performing Leadership rounds in the absence of SCN and upon Delegation. And play key role in monitoring patient hourly rounding to ensure proper documentation at agreed time frame.
  • Assesses the clinical and non-clinical risks every shift and documents in the safety huddle and takes measures to provide safe quality care to all patients.
  • Performs other related duties to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Monitors and guides staff as appropriate in the provision of care and providing support or supervision as required.
  • Assesses the ward and patient care needs and available resources for current and next shift and ensures smooth functioning of the unit in her shift.
  • Responsible to ensure that bed allocation and staff skill mix is appropriate as per patient acuity system.
  • Ensures nurses assess patient’s condition and escalate deterioration in condition using the PEWS escalation tool in the pediatric unit
  • Co-ordinates admission/transfer’s/discharges and supports patients in access to follow up care or other healthcare services.
  • Ensures nurses assess for falls using the Humpty Dumpty Pediatric risk assessment tool and take preventive measures to prevent the incidence of falls in pediatric unit
  • Ensures nurses assess the patients for pressure injury risk using the Braden scale and take preventive measures to prevent pressure injuries in children
  • Demonstrates a good level of understanding for the age appropriate care of pediatric patients
  • Maintaining child safety and security by providing a safe and secure environment for children in the pediatric unit.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and adherent in Root Cause Analyses of sentinel events, serious safety events, and significant “near misses” to identify gaps in processes, procedures, or human error and to develop action plans to prevent reoccurrence and ensures timely and complete data entry into appropriate databases.
  • Knowledgeable and adherent to recognized patient’s safety goals at all times. Responsible for staff knowledge, education and implementation within the unit/program.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • B.Sc. in nursing or Equivalent Qualification with minimum of 3 years’ study duration from an accredited nursing program and valid / current national nursing license.
  • Current Valid BLS and PALS
